Hollywood
Mash Club

Your local nano brewery.

Sharing the art of craft brewing, making great beer, and enjoying it together.

Beneath the bowling club

A brewery nobody expects to find under a bowling green.

In early 2025, the Hollywood Mash Club established a 65-litre, computer-controlled nano-brewery beneath the Hollywood Subiaco Bowling Club. Every beer we brew is served fresh through the bowling club bar for members to enjoy.

We can brew almost any beer style, but our passion is creating craft beers our members genuinely love — recipes that constantly evolve through feedback from our community.

Our story

From Garage to Basement

How a backyard hobby became a 65-litre nano-brewery underneath a bowling club.

Beer being carefully poured, close up

Chapter One · The Spark

A hobby that outgrew the garage.

Sean's passion for brewing eventually outgrew the family garage. What started as a handful of home-brewed batches became something the whole street could smell on a Saturday — and something that needed a proper home.

Wooden barrels, evoking the search for a permanent brewing space

Chapter Two · The Search

Together with Thor, the hunt for a permanent home began.

A custom-built nano-brewery needs somewhere real to live — power, plumbing, drainage, ventilation. Sean and Thor started looking for a space that could handle it.

Chapter Three · The Discovery

Andrew found it: an unused basement, right beneath the bowling green.

Dusty, forgotten, and completely unexpected — the basement beneath the Hollywood Subiaco Bowling Club turned out to be exactly what the team needed.

Chapter Four · The Build

Months of hard work turned dust into a working brewery.

New electrical systems. New plumbing. Drainage, ventilation, and a lot of painting. Every wall, pipe and switch in this basement was fitted by hand by the team who now brew here.

Chapter Five · Today

Fresh craft beer, served proudly upstairs.

Today the brewery proudly serves fresh craft beer directly upstairs to club members — brewed a few metres and one staircase from the glass it's poured into.

The Brain

A Raspberry Pi controller monitors and drives our three-vessel HERMS rig in real time — mash temperature, recirculation, boil timing, all logged and adjusted batch to batch. It's a 65-litre brewery with the temperament of a lab instrument.

Control

Pi

Step 01 / 06

Ingredients

Malt, hops, yeast and water — weighed and logged before anything hits the mash tun. Small batches mean every gram matters.

Step 02 / 06

Mash

Crushed grain steeps in precisely heated water, recirculated through the HERMS coil until starches convert to fermentable sugar.

Step 03 / 06

Boil

The wort hits a rolling boil, hops go in on schedule, and the Pi keeps a close eye on temperature and timing throughout.

Step 04 / 06

Fermentation

Yeast takes over, converting sugar into alcohol and character. Temperature-controlled and patiently watched, days at a time.

Step 05 / 06

Conditioning

The beer rests, clarifies and carbonates, settling into the flavour it was designed for before it ever reaches a glass.

Step 06 / 06

Pour

Straight from tank to tap, upstairs at the bowling club bar. The whole basement-to-glass trip is only a few metres.
